List of States
The United States of America is an expansive and diverse country. Divided into 50 states, this country started quite small as a colony of England and slowly grew into one of the most powerful countries in the world. Each state is a small government in and of itself. While the Federal government has quite a bit of control over each state, each individual state has rules and regulations of it's own. Each state controls the amount of taxes they will collect from it's citizens. Each state has it's own judiciary system that controls the punishments that criminals will receive. Each state has both state and local governments that control the laws that it's citizens must follow. Each state controls it's own liquor laws. Each state has it's own flag, it's own flower and it's own flag. Many of the states have names that came from the country of the initial settlers. Great Britain, Spain and Mexico are just a few of these countries.
There are geographic groupings that describe certain areas in which our states reside. There is New England, the Middle Atlantic, the South, the Midwest, the Southwest, and the West. Most of these areas have much in common between the states. Their yearly temperature tends to be very similar. Many of the states in each region have similar political and moral beliefs.
While each state is part of America, many differences can be seen from one individual state to another. Speech patterns can change dramatically from state to state. Each state's citizens also tend to choose different types of food, influenced dramatically by original settlers and immigrants in each state.
